This week’s Beat Latino is inspired in a song by the legendary Tigres del Norte –“El Sueño de Bolivar”, i.e., Bolivar’s Dream – which sings of Latines coming together in the USA to fulfill the dream of the great Independence Hero Simón Bolivar (Bolivar wanted to unite Latin American lands and in fact won the independence of many from Spain, including Colombia, Panamá, Venezuela). The selection of the week includes bands that have members with heritages from different Latin American lands – bands such as California’s Chicano Batman and Texas’ Luna Luna (each having members with heritages from Colombia, El Salvador and Mexico) or Making Movies (members with heritages from Panama, Mexico, and the USA) as well as collaborations between musicians such as Buscabulla (Puerto Rico) and Chile (Alex Andwandter). It’s a marvelous selection of tunes that fuse different heritages, with takes on Latine music from indie pop to retro soul. Enjoy!
